Preventative Services
Dental Checkups
- Every 6 months dental check-ups provide Dr. Jackie with the opportunity to:
- Carefully check your child’s teeth and identify problems when they are small
- Monitor orofacial growth and development and make timely referrals
- Examine gums and surrounding tissues
- Ensure the best overall oral health for your child
- Exams every 6 months allow us to spot issues when they are small and provide easier and less expensive treatment options.
Dental Cleaning
- Every 6 months, we will provide your child with a professional cleaning.
- The goal of cleaning is to remove plaque and tartar buildup above and below the gum line.
- “Sugar Bugs” can be hiding in the hard-to-reach nooks and crannies of our teeth.
- Plaque/ “Sugar Bugs”
- the soft buildup on our teeth that can mostly be removed with thorough brushing and flossing
- Tartar
- the calcified buildup that has been hardened due to minerals in our saliva. This cement-like plaque bonds strongly to teeth and requires professional removal.
- Plaque/ “Sugar Bugs”
- >3 years old- cleanings are often done in a dental chair and with the same instruments utilized for adult cleanings.
- Tickle brush = prophy angle
- Tooth counters= scalers/explorer
- Mirror
- Floss
- <3 years old- cleanings are often done in a knee-to-knee position to make your child comfortable.
- Toothbrush or tickle brush
- Tooth counter
- Mirror
- Floss
Fluoride treatment
- If your child is at a moderate/high risk for cavities or has deficient/defective enamel, we may recommend Fluoride Varnish or “Tooth Vitamins”. These vitamins are very sticky and are applied with a small paintbrush directly to your child’s teeth. They are best absorbed if kids refrain from eating for 30 minutes after placement.
- Fluoride works in 3 ways
- Promotes Remineralization
- Prevents Demineralization
- Creates a protective cloak around the tooth with Calcium and Fluoride.
- When you eat carbohydrates, this creates acid. The acid production then stimulates a further release of fluoride from the “protective cloak” which will in turn reduce the bacteria’s cavity-causing abilities.
- We use unit doses.
- This ensures that your child will never get “too” much fluoride in our office
- Kid-friendly flavors: strawberry, marshmallow, chocolate, and mint.
Low-dose digital radiography
- Our top priority is the safety of our patients.
- We utilize state-of-the-art technology that provides the lowest dose of radiation possible and allows us to adjust the radiation for kids' body sizes.
- The purpose of a dental x-ray is to help us diagnose conditions we cannot see with our eyes. Dental X-rays help us to identify problems early and this allows us to provide more preventative treatments and less invasive treatments.
- Dental X-Rays help us diagnose:
- Cavities between the teeth
- Developmental conditions that are happening at or below bone level
- We only prescribe x-rays when they are necessary and each child’s plan for radiographs will be different.
- Fun Facts:
- 2 bananas contain the same amount of radiation as 1 digital dental x-ray!
- A flight from PHL to LAX contains more than 10x the amount of radiation that we expose a kid to with a full mouth series, which is 4 bitewings and 2 occlusal films!

Dental sealants
- Dental sealants are a physical barrier painted on the GROOVY surfaces of our back teeth to help prevent cavities.
- They work by preventing food impaction and creating a flatter, more cleanable area of the tooth.
- They only protect biting surfaces and are not a replacement for daily flossing and brushing.
- They can be applied to baby and permanent teeth and are prescribed on a case-by-case basis.
- Sealants typically last 3-5 years but this is largely dependent on diet.
- Stickier, chewier foods and candies tend to remove sealants more quickly.
- By age 17, 78% of kids have had at least one cavity. How do we change the statistics?
- Dietary education
- 2 of the leading causes of cavities:
- 1. Chip/Crackers (I.E. Goldfish, Doritos, Cheetos)
- 2. Sugared beverages (i.e. Gatorade, Ice Tea, Soda)
- 2 of the leading causes of cavities:
- Good brushing/flossing
- Dental preventative measures like fluoride and sealants.

Silver Diamine Fluoride
- Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a medicine used to reduce tooth sensitivity and arrest dental caries. Silver is an antimicrobial agent that kills bacteria and prevents the formation of new biofilm and the Fluoride promotes remineralization and prevents softening of the tooth structure.
- It is an ideal treatment option for children who are not able to sit for traditional fillings.
- Special healthcare needs
- pre-cooperative/young
- It is quick and easy to apply.
- The tooth with the cavity is isolated/kept dry
- A spongy/absorbent floss is placed between your child’s teeth
- A small brush is dipped in a drop of SDF and placed on the lesion(s) for a short period of time
- Excess SDF is removed and patients are instructed to not eat or drink for 30 minutes
- *Multiple applications often required
- We like to meet or exceed your expectations and so treatment photos will be reviewed with you when we prescribe this treatment.
- Note: SDF does cause any cavity/weakened enamel to turn black.
